Rapper Fred the Godson dies aged 35 after battling coronavirus in hospital

Rapper Fred the Godson has died at the age of 35 after battling coronavirus in hospital.

The star, best known for tracks including Toast To That and Doves Fly has died just a couple of weeks after confirming he was ill with Covid-19, according to TMZ.

Fred previously revealed he was in hospital on oxygen in an Instagram post earlier this month.

Holding out his fist in the selfie as he was hooked up to the machine, Fred said: ‘I’m in here with this Covid-19 s**t! Please keep me in y’all prayers!!! #GodIsGreat’. 

The star had previously urged others to stay indoors and be safe, posting pictures of him wearing a facemask as he tried to avoid catching the virus, and asking for recommendations on music to listen to while in quarantine.

Fred had an impressive career, making waves in the music industry and working with stars including Diddy, Pusha T and Mac Miller.

Last year, Fred dropped his album God Level, as well as releasing a solo project and acollaborative release with Jay Pharoah this year.

Friends and fans of the late musician have been paying tribute on social media, with one writing: ‘Damn, RIP my man Fred The Godson. Since like 2001 it was always great vibes and bar fests when we were around one another. Lyrical swordsman of the highest order for the city. Smh.’

Another added: ‘Today is a sad one.. My guy Fred.. I thank God I was able to spend a few days in the lab with him in February hangin out..talkin music and life with our brother Joell.. Fred The Godson rest in poetry, power and paradise.’

‘King Gordo a real legend mc. rest easy Fred The Godson,’ one more said.

New York has been known as a hotspot for coronavirus, with deaths in the state topping 21,000 this week.

At least 14,427 of those fatalities occurred in New York City.
