Rangers’ decision to sign Andy King on loan from Leicester City has been questioned by Alan Hutton.
King was Steven Gerrard’s 10th summer signing in a bid to bolster his midfield.
But with a large number of central midfielders already, Hutton isn’t sure why Gerrard bothered to make the signing.
Ryan Jack, Steven Davis and Greg Stewart started in midfield for the weekend’s recent 5-0 win over Aberdeen.
Joe Aribo, Glen Kamara, Scott Arfield and Andy Halliday are also competing for places in Gerrard’s starting line-up in midfield.
“It’s strange because he obviously wants to come and play football,” Hutton told Football Insider.
“The thing with Rangers is they’ve got a lot of midfielders. It’s going to be difficult to break into it.
“We all know he’s got quality. He’s not played as much as he would have liked, and is coming for games.
“I think that’s one of the most difficult areas to break into in the Rangers team.
“They are playing with the three, and to have, say, 10 midfielders, it’s always going to be difficult.”
King has made just two appearances for Rangers in the Scottish Premiership since his arrival.
On both of those occasions, he only came onto the pitch at the end of the match, amounting to just 21 minutes of league action combined.
He also failed to make the starting line-up for Rangers’ Scottish League Cup ties against East Fife and Livingston, before coming off the bench within the final half hour of both matches.
Meanwhile, Rangers have been in superb form since their 2-0 defeat to Celtic in the Old Firm derby.
They’ve won four league matches in a row, conceding just one goal during that time, having scored 14.
Gerrard’s side have moved to within a point of league leaders Celtic after their latest victory, after the Hoops dropped points for the first time this season.
Celtic were held to a 1-1 draw against Hibernian at Easter Road on Saturday.
