Rangers boss Steven Gerrard identifies players he wants to sign to catch Celtic

Rangers will end the season without a trophy in Gerrard’s debut campaign, which is something the former England captain isn’t keen on repeating next year.

Gerrard knows where the club need to improve to match rivals Celtic, and warned his squad he already has an idea which players will be dropped from his first-team plans.

He said: “We certainly know the players we want to take with us going forward.”

Rangers slipped away from Celtic in the Premiership at the turn of the year, shortly after going three points behind their Old Firm rivals.

Gerrard is aware that his squad needs revamp, but he does think that improvements have been made this season.

He added: “I think there has been progress in different areas, I look at the bigger picture and not just the points tally.

“There is still a lot of work to do.

“We are at the stage of the season where you can go and identify players but until the window opens you can’t go and get they targets.

“At the minute we have to go after free contracts.”

Alfredo Morelos is one player that has been linked with an exit, with Gerrard unhappy with his disciplinary record.

He continued: “All you do is move forward with the people you trust and when the time comes you leave the others behind.

“We will have to wait and see what the window brings, I can’t give you any names at the moment.

“It is important that we do improve the quality of the eleven going forward.”

Meanwhile, Rangers defender Jon Flanagan has warned his team-mates that Aberdeen are sure to raise their game on Sunday, and that they should take it as a compliment.

He said: “I think every team up here raises their game when they play Rangers. I think it is a compliment to the football club.

“It’s always going to happen, you have to deal with it. Rangers is a massive club and everyone who plays here should expect it.”
