Manchester United 1-0 Aston Villa: Rangnick reaction

Cristiano Ronaldo is set to return for Manchester United’s Premier League trip to Aston Villa tomorrow.

Ronaldo missed United’s 1-0 FA Cup over Aston Villa with a hip issue, but interim boss Ralf Rangnick said the forward – and skipper Harry Maguire should both return for the league encounter with Steven Gerrard’s side.

Jadon Sancho and centre-back Phil Jones are also in contention after sitting out the cup clash.

“I think they will be available,” said Rangnick. “They only trained yesterday for the first time, Cristiano yesterday, Harry the day before yesterday.

“We have to wait for the final training session but they should be available.”

Rangnick said he sympathised with players who want to go out on loan to get more game-time, like goalkeeper Dean Henderson and midfielder Donny van de Beek.

“Well, I told Dean I would like him to stay, because he is a fantastic goalkeeper,” said Rangnick.

“In training yesterday he had a couple of fantastic saves. I can fully understand he wants to play, he’s at an age where you should regularly play, but we’re in three competitions and we need goalkeepers right now.

“I had a conversation with him after training two weeks ago and advised him to stay, with the World Cup coming up in the winter, he wants to play.

“Louis van Gaal told him to be a regular starter he has to play for his team, but on the other hand, we have a lot of competition in our squad in those positions.
