The newest star of Death in Paradise Ralf Little has revealed that his mum was worried he might ‘ruin’ the crime drama when he took over as the main star this year

It was only this month that the Royle Family was officially replaced Ardal O’Hanlon as the detective-in-resident on the island of Saint Marie.

But although the actor is already making a whole bunch of new fans by joining the new series one person, in particular, was a bit nervous about his new role – his own mother!

Remembering the moment he told his mum that he had landed the gig he told the Radio Times magazine: ‘Mum went, “But what if no one likes you and they stop watching it?”

‘I was like, “Thanks, Mum!” So I hope I don’t affect ‘Death in Paradise’ like George Clooney did Batman.’

Well, don’t worry Ralf, even if that does happen – all you need is Christian Bale to come in and revive it!

No pressure?

In the new series, Ralf plays, Neville Parker a ‘reluctantly dispatched to the fictional island of Saint Marie to investigate the suspicious death of a woman from his home city, Manchester’.

Little’s most notable roles include Antony in BBC sitcom The Royle Family and Jonny in Two Pints Of Lager And A Packet Of Crisps.

Speaking about joining the show, Little said: ‘It took less than 0.005 seconds to say yes to playing the new DI! How could I not?

‘Ardal has been wonderful in the last few series and to follow in his footsteps in a place as idyllic as Guadeloupe was a great honour and a dream come true.

‘It is a joy to play Neville and I can’t wait for viewers to see him in Paradise this series.’

Ralf is the fourth lead character in Death In Paradise, following in the footsteps of Ardal, Kris Marshall, and Ben Miller.

Death in Paradise continues Thursday at 9pm on BBC One.
