Raheem Sterling's hidden role in helping Arsenal youngster revealed

Arsenal youngster Reiss Nelson has opened up on the help he has received from “role model” Raheem Sterling as he looks to make his Premier League breakthrough.

Nelson, 19, enjoyed a successful loan spell at 1899 Hoffenheim last season and is now aiming to make his mark on Unai Emery’s side in the top flight.

He has appeared for all of England’s age grade sides from Under 16s up to Under 21 level and has previously been involved in training with Gareth Southgate’s senior side.

The highly-rated youngster has now opened up on how he has been helped by encouragement by Manchester City star Sterling both in person and via social media.

Reiss Nelson says he has been inspired by Raheem Sterling

“Raheem is a role model to a lot of young lads coming through. He gives me little messages on Instagram , like “keep going”,” Nelson said.

“I was training with the England team a couple of times and he is there always giving encouragement.

“It is always good to have people like him in and around the England set-up to give you the pat on the back that you know you are doing well and good things are coming.”

Nelson scored seven Bundesliga goals last season and admitted it was a hard choice to leave Germany as he commits to trying to make the grade in north London.

“It was difficult leaving (Germany) but Arsenal are my team and I want to go back to Arsenal and play,” he added.

“I have got a bit bigger. I was playing at Arsenal when I was 17, when he (Arsene Wenger) gave me my debut against Southampton , so I was very immature when I was playing.

“Now I have a more mature role about me. I look to play link-up play, one v ones, and I think I am more mature.”
