Raheem Sterling urges Gareth Southgate to call Phil Foden into England squad

Raheem Sterling wants Phil Foden in the England team with him – but Pep Guardiola claims he must wait for his Manchester City chance.

Sterling urged Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate to hand Foden his first senior call-up after the 19-year-old came off the bench to score City’s second goal against Dinamo Zagreb.

Sterling made the breakthrough after coming on and he was delighted to see Foden bag his first goal of the season.

“The players that we have here, you have to read the game and the goals will come,” said Sterling. “I’m buzzing for Phil and I want him in the national team. If he keeps going he will be there.”

Guardiola admits he has been “unfair” on Foden, but says he will have to continue to be patient because the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, David Silva and Rodri are ahead of him.

“I know he deserves to play and I want to give him minutes,” said the City boss. “I’m unfair to him. I’m sorry, but he has De Bruyne, Silva, Rodri.

“I know the best way is for him to play minutes, but he’s so young. I don’t know how many players of his age has played so many minutes. He’s going to be incredible in the future, but it is what it is.”

Guardiola, who refused to comment on Dutch referee Serdar Gozubuyuk after being booked for complaining about his officiating, also claimed Sterling can get even better.

Sterling has scored 41 goals for club and country and Sterling said: “I’ve said many times he’ll be a better player than today.

“I think still he can improve his finishing. Today the pass for Phil was perfect. But still there is a gap to be even more clinical.”
