Raheem Sterling could be seen applauding the introduction of Joe Gomez as the Liverpool defender was surprisingly booed by England fans.

Gomez came on in the second of England’s 7-0 rout of Montenegro at Wembley just days after his high profile bust-up with Sterling.

Gareth Southgate dropped Sterling for the match after he sparked the minor melee, which left Gomez with a scratch under his eye.

Sterling watched from the stands of England’s 1000th game, while Gomez started the match on the bench.

Gomez was introduced with 20 minutes left and a section of England fans decided to boo the centre-back as he came on.

TV cameras caught Sterling’s reaction, with the Manchester City star applauding Gomez as he replaced Mason Mount.

The booing of Gomez was slammed on social media, with journalists and fans alike baffled by the reception he received.

Gomez lobbied for Sterling not to be sent home after their bust-up and accept the apology from his team-mate.

The victory secured England’s spot in next summer’s Euro 2020, with Harry Kane scoring a hat-trick.
