Rachel Johnson Change UK candidate: Why is Boris Johnson's sister standing in EU election?

Rachel Johnson will stand as a European election candidate in the upcoming elections for party Change UK. Boris Johnson’s sister will stand in the South West region, it was confirmed today. Ms Johnson appeared at an event in Bristol today to launch the party’s election campaign.

Ms Johnson is the sister of former foreign secretary Boris Johnson and is one of the candidates in the European elections for anti-Brexit party Change UK.

She stands alongside broadcast journalist Gavin Esler, who has said Brexit was based on “cheating and lies” and stated he was fed up of Nigel Farage and Jacob Rees-Mogg for selling “snake oil”.

Mr Esler added: “I have never been a member of a political party but I am now.

“I have never been a candidate in an election but I am now. I have never been seriously worried about the future of our country but I am now. Our political system is a joke.

“It is a worldwide joke. They are laughing at us – not with us, at us.”

What is Change UK?

Change UK is an anti-Brexit party formed from The Independent Group, which is made up of eight Labour MPs and three Tory MPs who left their parties in February.

Change UK applied to become an official party in March and was this month given approval, meaning they can stand in the European elections.

The party is calling on voters who are disillusioned by the chaos of Brexit to vote for them, and send a strong message to the long-established parties that change needs to happen.

Former Tory MP Heidi Allen, described the candidates as “Tiggers”, adding: “This is no rebel alliance, this is the home of the remain alliance. If you’re fed up with our broken politics join us.”

She said the MPs who defected had no choice but to say, “enough is enough”.

She said the Tories had moved further to the right and Labour had let the country down.

Who is Rachel Johnson?

Rachel Johnson is a British editor, journalist and television presenter who frequently appears on programmes such as Question Time and Sky News’ The Pledge.

Ms Johnson, 53, is also known for her stint on Celebrity Big Brother in which she was the second to be evicted.

Ms Johnson, whose brother Jo is a Conservative MP also campaigning to overturn Brexit, told the Evening Standard: “A vote to leave the EU is so important, so life-changing for the next two generations that I am impelled to stand up and be counted for what I believe in, which is that we are far better in Europe.”

The European Elections take place from May 23 until May 26, 2019.
