Michael Sheen has found a ‘new found respect’ for Chris Tarrant after playing him in Who Wants To Be A Millionaire drama, Quiz.
The actor will be retelling the real-life 2001 infamous tale of Major Charles Ingram and his wife Diana, who managed to swindle their way to the million pound cash prize.
Chris Tarrant was host in the much-loved quiz game for 15 years, and unwittingly took centre stage in the scandal, where Ingram was given the answers via coughs from his wife and pal, Tecwen Whittock in the audience.
But the biggest thing Michael took away from the show was how impressive Tarrant was, and his skill as a presenter in an intense show.
‘In watching him on the show – I mean, I always enjoyed the show and I always enjoyed him on the show – did give me a real respect for what a brilliant job he does on it,’ he said.
‘It’s not just him presenting it, he’s stage managing that thing. Watching it over and over again and then actually doing it, it’s so amazing what the music and the lighting does.’
In order to transform into Tarrant (with scary accuracy, we might add) Michael Sheen had to put on a painful hairpiece consisting of a tight bald cap, before putting the wig on over the top.
‘I’ve got these weird bleached eyebrows now that makes me look a bit strange with my normal hair but making that look like it’s natural… it’s all of that,’ he said.
‘You can sort of go from one extreme. How much do you try to look like the person? How much do you start adding things and sticking things on?
‘My tendency is to try and do as little as possible, not add too much, so you do what you can with your own hair, do what you can with your face.’
Quiz starts 13 April on ITV.
