What a fowl job… hero Edan March climbs into a water-filled sewer to save eight ducklings that had fallen in a drain.

Edan had been woken by their mother quacking in distress near his home and realised her young were missing.

After putting his ear to several manholes along the street he heard tiny quacking noises, so grabbed a wrench from his garage, removed the drain cover and jumped inside. He then lifted seven of the chicks, one-by-one, to partner Georgia Littlejohn, 27, who reunited them with their mother.

‘I just acted on instinct really,’ the salesman, 26, said after the rescue at 6am on Monday. ‘I’m 6ft 1in tall and was fully submerged when I went down the drain. I must have looked a sight.’

Edan, of Husbands Bosworth, Leicestershire, said the mallard had been nesting in his front garden for several weeks before the mishap. ‘We assume she was leading them to a pond when the babies fell down the drain,’ he added.

Nursery manager Ms Littlejohn, mum to the couple’s one-year-old daughter Piper, added: ‘Mummy duck was thrilled to have her ducklings back.

‘Piper and I led the ducklings to the pond and stood on each drain grid to ensure no more fell in.

‘Ed found another duckling but as he went to grab it, it ran off down the pipe.

‘We waited and waited but the chirp was inaudible. We went to the pond and to our surprise there were eight ducklings. We think the last one had made its way into the pond through the underground pipes.

‘We’re so pleased our little duck family is safe and sound.’
