After multiple vehicles and emergency service workers were called, 9 News reported, the substance was analysed and revealed as washing powder.

On board the plane were approximately 130 passengers who were bound for Brisbane from Sydney.

They were initially told not to move off the aircraft.

Passenger were later evacuated from the plane while the investigation was carried out and moved onto another plane two hours behind schedule.

A passenger told 9 News: “Initially they said no-one was allowed off the plane until they identified what the substance was, obviously for a health and safety purpose.

“But then the captain came on and said they had identified that the security scale had gone down so people were allowed off.”

After the substance was tested, it was found to be safe and was a form of detergent, being deemed “non-suspicious”.

Another passenger said: “It was very calm. They got all the people off that didn’t have luggage in the hold and put them on other flights.

“I had luggage in the hold so I had to wait and now they’re transferring us to a brand new plane and they’ll get us up to Brisbane eventually.”

The emergency response was “standard practice” for the situation after a call was made reporting the package.

Qantas told 9 News that all of the passengers on the Boeing 737 had been “accommodated on another flight” following the investigation.

Passengers arrived in Sydney a few hours later than planned.

Last month, a JetBlue plane was evacuated after a prankster sent a picture of a suicide vest to everyone on board the aircraft.

Earlier this week, a man made a fake bomb threat in a bid to get a flight attendant to go on a date with him, which resulted in a full evacuation of the Lufthansa flight.
