Q Awards 2019 results: The 1975, Stormzy, Lewis Capaldi, Christine and The Queens crowned winners

UK grime stars swept the board at the Q Awards with Stormzy, Kano, Dizzee Rascal and Little Simz claiming the music magazine’s top honours.

A shake-up at the event, once dominated by “rock legends,” was signalled by inviting rising singer-songwriter Nadine Shah to become the first woman to present the awards.

The i newsletter cut through the noise

The Hero special award went to Kim Gordon, the co-founder of New York band Sonic Youth and “godmother of grunge”, who is cited as an inspiration by many female musicians.

Stormzy wins

A celebratory night for UK rap and grime culminated with Stormzy winning Best Solo Act, beating Liam Gallagher.

Stormzy announced that his publishing company #Merky Books, has acquired world rights for the autobiography of the top-selling Young Adult fiction author Malorie Blackman.

Grime pioneer Kano took the Outstanding Contribution award whilst Dizzee Rascal was given the Innovation honour and London rapper Little Simz won best vocal performance.

The 1975 ‘best act’

The Scot has racked up one billion global streams for Best Track winner Someone You Loved and one million sales for debut album, Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent.

Del Rey recognised

There were emotional scenes at the Camden Roundhouse awards with Edwyn Collins receiving the Maverick award. The former singer with cult Scottish group Orange Juice suffered two cerebral haemorrhages in 2005 which left him unable to speak.

He has since recovered his speech and his musical powers to release a series of well-received albums.

Video Games, the atmospheric 2011 ballad which launched Lana Del Rey’s career, was named Song of the Decade.

The Q Awards also paid homage to Dexys Midnight Runners frontman Kevin Rowland by awarding him the Classic Songwriter Award.
