PUBG Corporation Teases More Arena Events and Revenue Sharing for 2020

  • The 2020 esports calendar for PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS (PUBG) will include three major live events on top of its Global Championship.
  • Berlin will host the first event in April, while the regional leagues (including Europe and North America) will transition to open qualifiers.
  • New in-game items will be made for each live event to supplement prize pools and create additional team revenue.

PUBG Corporation will alter its esports structure for next year, favoring tournament circuits over regional leagues. The newly titled PUBG Global Series (PGS) will include four live events in cities during April, July, October, and November—the last of which will be the PUBG Global Championship (PGC).

Berlin will host the first of these events, with four of the total 32 team slots to be given to the top placing teams from the PGC 2019. Berlin hosted the PUBG Global Invitational in 2018, and is where StarLadder’s PUBG European League (PEL) was broadcasted from this year.

The announcement stated that the PEL and other regional leagues would transition into open qualifiers for the PGS events. The exact structure was not provided, instead, it was stated that the qualifiers would include “both online and offline elements,” and that players would no longer need to reside in the city of their regional competition.

PUBG Corporation is also looking to double down on its crowdfunding initiatives, having distributed over $6M USD in prize money at this year’s PGC. It stated each live event in 2020 would offer its own set of in-game items, designed to supplement prize pools and provide more revenues for participating teams. This comes after team-based items for the PGC, one of the early promises for entrants into PUBG esports, never materialized.

Furthermore, the publisher will allow more third-party events to be run next year. More details on the PGS are to be revealed this January.
