PS5 launch games: confirmed and otherwise – Reader’s Feature

What game is Sony cooking up for the PS5? (pic: Sony)

A reader offers his best guess as to what games will be released for the PlayStation 5 at launch, from Gran Turismo 7 to Horizon Zero Dawn 2.

So, it’s getting near the end of February now and we not only know nothing new about the PlayStation 5, but we have no idea when to expect any news. In fact, we have even less of a clue than at the start of the year because thanks to the coronavirus Sony has started cancelling public appearances, so even if they were planning something this month or next they’ve probably changed their mind now anyway.

Some people are now suggesting that Sony might not fully reveal the PlayStation 5 until August at Gamescom, or just delay the whole launch until next year, but the truth is no one has a clue. And that probably includes Sony.

What Sony will know though is what games will be ready for launch, since their development won’t be as affected by the coronavirus. If the launch is delayed beyond what was originally planned, they may end up with more than they expected but this is my best guess as to what they have in store:

Godfall
The only exclusive game we know that’s definitely coming to PlayStation 5 this year is this third person action game being published by Gearbox. To be honest, it looks kind of generic and officially all we’ve had is a super brief teaser trailer, but beggars can’t be choosers when it comes to console launches.

The Last Of Us Part 2 and Ghost Of Tsushima
If all goes well both of these games will be out by the time the PlayStation 5 launches so the big question is whether Sony will create remastered versions of them or just have them run via backwards compatibility. My guess is it’ll be the second choice. Getting people to double dip just a few months later is not a good look and I think it’s much more likely there’ll be some kind of free patch to help the games take advantage of the new console.

Demon’s Souls Remastered
Bluepoint, the team behind the excellent Shadow Of The Colossus remake, are definitely working on something for the PlayStation 5 launch but the question is what. Every rumour and hint points towards Demon’s Souls, the predecessor to Dark Souls, and yet that seems a really odd choice to me. It’s obscure and it’s super hard and un-casual friendly, but I guess it has hardcore cred so maybe it is true.

Gran Turismo 7
I don’t think Sony has even officially said there is a Gran Turismo 7, but it’s got to be a very likely choice for PlayStation 5 launch game. We haven’t had a numbered sequel for a generation now and the developers were talking about 8K and 120 fps just the other day. Other rumours have also pointed towards Gran Turismo 7 as a launch game and I will be shocked if it’s not at least heavily trailered.

Horizon Zero Dawn 2
We haven’t heard a peep out of Guerrilla Games since the DLC for Horizon Zero Dawn was released in 2017. They haven’t said what they’re working on but it’s pretty obvious that a sequel is underway – given how successful the original was and how much better it is than anything they’ve done previously. Guerrilla are also known for their state-of-the-art graphics and have made launch games before. The only slight knock against it is that the original could be a bit slow, which doesn’t always demo well, but it’s almost a guarantee to be out this year.

God Of War 2
It’s two years now since the reboot, so you’d expect the sequel to be well underway by now. Especially as it would be able to use a lot of tech and systems from the original, rather than starting from scratch. Two years isn’t long enough to make a great game though, so while I’d imagine God Of War 2 to be trailered pretty heavily at launch I wouldn’t expected it to be actually finished and released until 2021 or 2022.

There is, of course, a good chance of multiple new IPs. In fact, I’d be very disappointed if there weren’t, but obviously you can’t predict them. I wouldn’t be surprised if Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was also trailered in a similar way to God Of War 2, as well as probably new games from regular Sony allies like Square Enix (maybe the second Final Fantasy 7 Remake chapter?) and Capcom (Onimusha or Dino Crisis?).

There’s also going to be a lot of cross-platform games this year, with probably most out in the second half of the year also coming to PlayStation 5, even if they probably won’t be much different. I believe Ubisoft has already confirmed all their games, like Watch Dogs: Legion, and there’s also Square Enix’s Outriders and almost certainly this year’s Call Of Duty.

It’s a potentially great line-up and Sony will undoubtedly be looking to beat Microsoft in what is the PlayStation’s area of dominance, so the only thing we now is… the console!
