PS5 controller leak good news for PS4 gamers following Xbox Scarlett console upgrade

PS4 gamers are finding out more about the upcoming release of the PS5 console in drips and drabs.

Sony themselves have been providing information throughout the year, albeit while leaving out key details.

The latest news doesn’t come directly from the tech giant but has instead been sourced from patents regarding the PS5 controller.

What makes this latest design leak a bit more interesting is that it seems to lineup with what we know about the new PS5 controller.

But there are also a few differences that fans may have noticed since Sony system architect Mark Cerny spoke last.

The latest patent shows a controller without a lightbar, something that wouldn’t affect many PS4 gamers.

But its main use has been found in PSVR, allowing for added tracking support, which would be missing if the lightbar is removed.

This doesn’t mean that Sony won’t provide something to replace this, and it should also be stated that this remains just a patent.

Designs such as these don’t always make it to market and this could be one of a number of prototypes that are left on the cutting room floor.

However, the media are certainly taking more note of this latest PS5 news over some of the other stuff we have heard.

As Engadget reports: “Based on the diagram, the controller may also forgo the two-tone design of its predecessor and include larger triggers.

“One detail that’s hard to make sense of is the inclusion of what looks like two separate headphone jacks on the bottom of the controller.”

Meanwhile, Ars Technica offers its own explanation for this change, adding: “The patent images also how a small strip running along the bottom center of the controller, below the apparent location of the PlayStation button, including small holes in the front and rear of the controller.

“Wired’s October story made specific mention of “a little hole” on the PS5 controller prototype being tested and raised the possibility that the hole could be an opening for a built-in microphone that might integrate with a recently patented “voice help system using artificial intelligence.”

Rumours suggest that a new PlayStation event will be held in early 2020 covering price and release details for the PS5.

And that’s not the only next-gen hardware news for gamers this week.

The Xbox All-Access Program has now gone live in the UK and the United States, giving Microsoft fans the chance to upgrade to Project Scarlett.

Xbox All Access has been available in-store at GAME or in-person and online at Smyths Toys from November 5 in the UK.

And now the programme has launched in the United States, with plenty of options to choose from.

The most headline-grabbing part of Xbox All-Access is being able to upgrade to Xbox’s next-generation Project Scarlett console in 2020.

Xbox All Access will offer Xbox One X gamers a way to get their hands on the new console as soon as it’s released alongside Halo Infinite, as long as they have made 18 payments.

For a limited time, anyone purchasing an Xbox One X console in this way before December 31, 2019, will have the option to upgrade to Project Scarlett when it officially launches in Holiday 2020.

An Xbox One X costs £24.99 a month, an Xbox One S costs £19.99 a month, and an Xbox One S All-Digital Edition costs £17.999 a month.

The new deal allows for an upgrade to the next Xbox console, even without knowing its full cost or what it looks like.
