PS5 controller DualSense gamepad revealed with haptic feedback, built-in mic

Sony has shown off the first piece of PlayStation 5 related hardware and the new joypad doesn’t look like what anyone expected.

Completely out of the blue, the PlayStation Blog has revealed the first images and info for the PlayStation 5 controller… and it’s not called the DualShock 5.

As you can see from the photos, it’s the most radical redesign of a PlayStation controller since the PS1 era and although the basic layout is the same as always the grips seem more similar to the Xbox controller, with a very different design.

It’s not just a visual overhaul either, as the DualSense has new haptic feedback features that aim to offer a next generation take on force feedback and rumble by simulating things like the feedback you’d get on a steering wheel from driving a car through mud.

The L2 and R2 shoulder buttons have adaptive triggers, which will also add more feedback to the controls, with Sony using the example of feeling the tension in the string when you shoot a virtual bow and arrow.

Other changes include turning the ‘Share’ button into a ‘Create’ button, although Sony hasn’t explained exactly what this means yet.

DualSense also has a built-in microphone array, so you can chat with friends without a headset – and worry about whether Sony is secretly listening to you when you’re alone.

The thrice cursed light bar is also back but this time it doesn’t seem to be at the back of the controller, only the front.

The most immediately striking thing about the controller is the redesign and the two-tone colour scheme, which presumably is going to match with whatever the console looks like.

When that will be revealed is a mystery but if this is anything to go by it’ll be at random, with no warning.

Or rather it’ll probably be while Microsoft is doing something that they announced in advance. The DualSense was revealed at exactly the same time as the first Inside Xbox show of the year and even though Microsoft only talked about Grounded and some indie games that still seems poor form on the part of Sony.
