This year’s Tokyo Games Show is set to feature ‘game consoles for the next generation’ but is it referring to the PS5 and Xbox Series X?
While some are no doubt disappointed over Sony choosing to skip PAX East and GDC this year, we may at the very least see some sort of presence from it and Microsoft at this year’s Tokyo Game Show.
Earlier today, the CESA (Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association), which organises TGS, sent out a press release with the first details, and the most eye-grabbing part, as noted by Twinfinite, is its mention of next gen consoles.
‘The theme of TGS2020 is ‘The Future Touches Gaming First,’ the press release reads, ‘Games are the most updated and accessible means to experience the emerging technologies that will unlock new possibilities for the future. With the theme of this year, the event expects to provide an opportunity for people to touch and play the latest games and immerse themselves in the feel of an exciting future that is just around the corner.
‘Featuring novel game consoles for the next generation, TGS 2020 is sure to attract even more attention from around the world.’
Although it doesn’t explicitly mention the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X, those are the only next gen consoles that have been announced so far and TGS could serve as a good opportunity for people to try them, since TGS takes place in September, is open to the public, and both consoles are expected to release before this Christmas.
At the moment, while we do have some solid details about the Xbox Series X, the PlayStation 5 continues to be shrouded in mystery. We still don’t even know what it looks like, with the closest thing being this render of a Sony patent, courtesy of LetsGoDigital.
It’s doubtful that Sony would leave it as late as September before it actually shows the console off for the first time, with the assumption up till now being a press reveal in February or March, followed by the ‘hundreds’ of consumer events that were promised in January (since Sony intends on skipping E3.)
However, with reports that the coronavirus could delay the next gen consoles’ launches, we may not see them released until 2021, which would certainly throw a wrench into both Sony and Microsoft’s Christmas plans.
The Tokyo Game Show will be held from 24 – 27 September.
