PS4 updates are always looked forward to, mainly due to them adding new features and options to the popular console. But with the PlayStation 5 arriving in 2020, there has been some concern that we could see a drop in Sony support in the coming months. The most recent PS4 update added a wave of new features that have has proven popular with gamers. This includes PlayStation console owners being able to use Remote Play features on a number of new devices, expanding the feature in a big way.
Sony also made it possible to link Bluetooth controllers to Android 10 devices, which is another big boost to fans.
Not only can PS4 gamers now use Remote Play properly on their Android phones, but they can use it on others too.
Call of Duty Mobile has proven very popular and now has added compatibility with PlayStation Dualshock controllers.
And little changes like this is what makes PS4 system updates so important to gamers throughout the year.
So what big changes can fans expect in 2020 and beyond on their PlayStation consoles?
While plenty of new features were added through PS4 System updates in 2019, a few were also removed.
This included Facebook disappearing from the PlayStation platform in October 2019.
This was another part of the most recent PS4 update which left fans without access on the PSN.
Starting on October 7th, 2019 Facebook’s integration was no longer supported on the PS4 system.
This included Facebook’s share features, leaving gamers unable to post gameplay and trophy activity and using the friend finder feature.
This also meant that profile pictures imported from Facebook can no longer be used.
Sony apologised for the inconvenience caused by this change but there’s a chance Facebook will be returning in the future.
It seems unlikely that we will see another major PSN update arrive in 2019, with early 2020 a more likely time for a patch.
And Facebook has left the door open to the social media platform returning to PS4 in the future.
No release date has been shared yet but it appears work is being down behind closed doors to change the current situation.
A spokesperson for Facebook told Kotaku: “We’re working with Sony to finalize an updated contract designed to improve the Facebook integration on PlayStation.
“While these discussions are in progress, Facebook features will not be available on PlayStation 4.
“We hope to bring these features back as soon as our teams reach an agreement.”
There’s also a chance that Facebook will wait until Sony launches its next major console, the PS5.
Depending on how different the operating system for both consoles will be, it might be easier to wait for the next iteration.
But this seems unlikely based on how massive an install base Sony’s PS4 has right now.
While the tech giant isn’t selling as many consoles as they used to, the PlayStation 4 now has over 100 million units in the wild.
And that should provide any social media platform an incentive to get the work done.
Other social apps still available on the PlayStation platform includes YouTube and Twitch, both of which are used for streaming games and other activities.
Other recent additions to the PlayStation App include Disney+, which can be downloaded today in the United States.
