Best known for her philanthropy, down-to-earth character and the scandal surrounding her marriage to – and divorce from – Prince Charles, Princess Diana also garnered much attention and many admires due to her sense of style.

A fashion icon of her generation, Diana, Princess of Wales, has remained an influence on the wardrobes of women ever since her tragic death over 20 years ago.

From figure-skimming Versace to that iconic Elizabeth and David Emanuel wedding dress – complete with a 25-foot train – Diana spent her later life rarely afraid of a sartorial statement.

Not always such a brave dresser, however, the Princess kept her style relatively uniform during her earlier days spent in the public eye.

Regularly sporting a frilled shoulder and an elegant hat, she felt more comfortable experimenting with colour rather than shape.

As the late eighties arrived, however, and the mother-of-two had seemingly had her fill of shoulder pads, the world saw a more sartorially savvy Princess.

Skirt suits, waist belts and pearl chokers took the place of her once-favoured frills during official engagements, while her casual approach to dressing saw a whole new side of the national treasure.

One of the true trailblazers of the now much-copied 90’s aesthetic, her later life saw the Princess sway away from the more feminine pieces of previous years towards high-waisted jeans and a loose button down shirt.

Often photographed leaving her London gym, Diana showed a penchant towards the decade’s iconic wedged trainer and slogan sweatshirt, with lycra mini cycling shorts even making their way into the royal wardrobe.
