Prince Harry made ‘last minute detour’ on tour to avoid ‘controversy’ over Meghan Markle

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle recently revealed their next royal tour as a married couple. The Queen’s grandson, 34, often represents the crown on Queen Elizabeth II’s behalf, promoting diplomacy and royal relations across the globe. Since his marriage to former Suits actress Meghan in 2018, the couple have undertaken such trips together, including a visit to Morocco prior to the birth of their son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor. Yet during their courtship, Prince Harry found it easy to divert via Meghan’s home in Canada to see his girlfriend during their long-distance relationship.

Katie Nicholl told of one such incident in her new book, Harry: Life, Loss and Love and detailed how the love birds had made a “pact” to see each other once a fortnight.

It was following a royal tour to the Caribbean when Harry decided to make a grand romantic gesture.

Katie wrote: “Harry was desperate to see her so instead of heading straight back to the UK, he decided too make a last minute detour.

“It was a further show of the seriousness of the romance.

“To avoid any controversy that could overshadow an otherwise successful tour, Harry paid for his airline ticket.

They added: “For the most part, when members of the Royal family travel overseas they adhere to a strict business schedule, but Harry was determined to see Meghan.

“Upon touching down in Toronto he went straight to her flat and neither emerged until Harry took the red eye home 48 hours later.”

The pair had a blossoming romance, and said I Do in front of the world in 2018.

Meanwhile, Express.co.uk previously reported how the Duke of Sussex, who became a dad in June, was approached about his honeymoon in rather unexpected circumstances during a royal tour.

Prince Harry was representing his grandmother, the Queen, 93, during an official excursion in Antigua in 2016.

Documenting the kind yet unexpected offer in his new book royal biographer Robert Hardman wrote: “For Prince Harry it (his eventual wedding announcement) also meant a welcome end to years of speculations, such as the excruciating if well-meaning remarks of the Prime Minister of Antigua, Gaston Browne, during the Prince’s 2016 visit.”

Quoting Gaston directly in his book, Queen of the World, Robert wrote: “‘I believe we are expecting a princess soon,’ the premier told the blushing Prince, long before any whiff of a royal engagement.

“‘You are very welcome to come on your honeymoon here.’”

The unexpected offer is not thought to have been taken up by Prince Charles’ son.

Meanwhile, Robert also detailed the impact of Harry and Meghan’s engagement on the royal brand and diffusing Brexit issues.

He wrote: “Having an American princess on the palace balcony (even one who would take British citizenship in due course) could hardly be more timely at a moment when post-referendum (Brexit) Britain was being accused of succumbing to inward nationalistic urges.

“The monarchy was unquestionably looking outwards and welcoming the world – to the heart of the family.”
