Prime Suspect actor John Benfield has sadly died at the age of 68.

The British TV star, whose real name was John Turner, is said to have battled a rare form of cancer and died at the Sobell House Hospice in Oxford on 16 June.

John’s agents Marham, Froggatt and Irwin told the Oxford Mail that John always brought ‘truth and integrity to his roles and was an imposing, strong and rugged figure, with a soul and belief in his craft’.

He is survived by his wife Lilian, son Freddie, and grandson Rex.

The actor was best known for his role in ITV’s Prime Suspect in which he starred as Detective Chief Superintendent Michael Kernan alongside Dame Helen Mirren.

Prime Suspect, which ran between between 1991 and 2006, focused on a no-nonsense female Detective Chief Inspector, Jane Tennison (Mirren) who has to prove herself in a male-dominated profession, with the support of her boss, DCS Mike Kernan (Benfield).

Born in Wanstead, Essex, John began his acting career with small parts in BBC drama adaptations such as The Winter’s Tale and The Day of the Triffids.

Throughout his career, Benfield worked with a range of well-known actors and directors, including the Wachowskis, Woody Allen, Gillian Armstrong, Jim Sheridan, Ken Loach, David Drury, Chris Menaul and Sam Mendes.

In addition to his more serious roles, Benfield was also cast in a number of comedies, such as Hippies as Dad alongside Simon Pegg and Sally Phillips, and BBC’s The Worst Week of My Life as Ron.

Benfield married Lilian on 6 May 1989 at Hammersmith Registry Office. Shortly after, they moved from London in 1990 to Old Marston Village where they stayed for 25 years before moving to Witney in 2015.

This is a developing story.
