Pret to launch its first vegan croissant next week

Pret A Manger has announced it will launch its first vegan croissant nationwide from next week.

The Very Berry Croissant will be available in Pret shops across the UK from January 7, with a croissant made from a vegan recipe filled with a sweet berry compote.

This marks the first time the lunchtime giant is selling a vegan-friendly croissant option – Pret sells over 20 million croissants in its stores each year and the new offering is due to ‘numerous customer requests’.

The Very Berry Croissant uses margarine and sunflower oil to re-create the buttery, light texture of a traditional croissant. The pastry is then filled with the berry compote and finished with a dusting of sugar.

Pret’s Global Head of Food Innovation, Hannah Dolan, said in a statement: “The Very Berry Croissant is just the beginning – we are looking forward to sharing more plant-based innovations with customers in 2020.”

Pret has also announced oat milk will be available in all shops from January 7 and that it will be dropping its extra charges on milk alternatives – meaning oat, rice and coconut milk will be offered free of charge alongside soya milk (which is already free of charge).
