Premier League clubs' plan to save the season amid coronavirus pandemic

Premier League clubs have reportedly hatched a plan to save the season amid the coronavirus pandemic – by playing all remaining games behind closed doors and at neutral venues.

All games would also be shown live on TV in a bid to provide fans with their football fix and appease broadcasters who have paid huge sums to show Premier League football.

At Tuesday’s UEFA summit, Europe’s leagues were given until June 30 to complete their fixtures, with the European Championship finals pushed back until next year to accommodate domestic football.

But Premier League clubs fear they still not will not be able to fulfil their fixtures in time, as they have more still to play than in other European leagues and uncertainty still looms over when games will be able to go ahead.

League bosses are also concerned about a potential breach of the division’s £3bn television contract if the season is not completed.

Clubs are to present their plan for fulfilling all remaining games at Thursday’s Premier League meeting

Now a group of Premier League clubs has come up with a radical plan to ensure all fixtures can be played, according to The Sun.

The plan – which the publication says will be put before Thursday’s Premier League meeting – would see all 92 remaining matches played behind closed doors, with all games broadcast live on television.

Games would be played at a minimal number of venues to keep down the number of police and medical staff needed, and they would most likely be played around the Midlands to ensure as little travel as possible.

Venues could stage more than one game per day, with clubs potentially having to play every three days in order to fulfil all their fixtures.

The rational behind matches being played at neutral venues would be to prevent home fans from turning up outside the stadium, as happened at the Champions League clash between Paris-Saint Germain and Borussia Dortmund last week.

Liverpool need to win just two more games to be confirmed as champions for the first time in 30 years – but there are also the European places and relegation to be sorted out, as well as promotion from the Championship.

Most Premier League teams have nine games remaining, but Manchester City, Sheffield United, Arsenal and Aston Villa each have 10 left to play.

There are also FA Cup matches to play, as well as the remainder of the Champions League and Europa League competitions.
