Premier League clubs advised they may only get two-week break before new season

Premier League clubs could get just a two-week break before the start of the new season.

This campaign has been suspended indefinitely after the country went into lockdown amid the coronavirus crisis.

The 20 Premier League clubs held a video conference on Friday as they try to find a way to complete the current season.

Some clubs still have 10 league games to play, while there are also domestic and European cup competitions to be finished.

A return to full training is still some way off as players carry out personal routines at home instead.

The Premier League season has been suspended indefinitely

FIFA have reportedly extended the season indefinitely, which would allow the Premier League to be finished off in the summer.

However, the new campaign is due to get underway on August 8, although this date could be pushed back.

The Daily Mail claim staff at Premier League clubs have been warned there could be as little as a two-week break between the seasons as they look to get the football schedule back on track.

It is thought that players would not require a full pre-season as they would already be match fit from the late ending of this campaign.

However, experts have warned players increase the risk of injuries if matches are crammed in to get the season finished, and this proposal could heighten fears about their well being.

Meanwhile, the Premier League have reiterated their intent to get the season finished.

A statement read: “It was acknowledged that the Premier League will not resume at the beginning of May – and that the 2019/20 season will only return when it is safe and appropriate to do so.

“The restart date is under constant review with all stakeholders, as the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic develops and we work together through this very challenging time.

“The Premier League is working closely with the whole of professional football in this country, as well as with the Government, public agencies and other relevant stakeholders to ensure the game achieves a collaborative solution.

“With this, there is a combined objective for all remaining domestic league and cup matches to be played, enabling us to maintain the integrity of each competition.

“However, any return to play will only be with the full support of the Government and when medical guidance allows.”
