Poundland to reopen 26 more stores today – see full list of branches

POUNDLAND is reopening another 26 of its stores today after they shut during the coronavirus outbreak.

The discount retailer has kept a majority of its 800 shops open for essential shopping during lockdown, although it temporarily closed around 100 branches in March.

The majority of these closed stores had another outlet close by or were in a shopping centre which faced difficulties remaining open.

But as lockdown measures are eased, Poundland is now welcoming shoppers to more stores.

The 26 branches, which will open their doors again today, come on top of the 51 stores Poundland reopened last week.

Poundland said it was working closely with shopping centre landlords to reopen the last of its 40 closed stores as soon as possible.

Reopened stores have implemented new social distancing measures including security guards at the door to limit the number of customers at any one time and floor markers to help customers keep two metres apart.

Other measures in place include perspex screens to protect workers and customers and “rigorous hygiene routines”, which include workers washing their hands every 20 minutes and surfaces being wiped down every hour.

These measures are part of the guidelines businesses must abide by if they wish to reopen.

Managing director Barry Williams said: “As an essential retailer, we’ve continued to support customers in hundreds of towns – especially those who manage their budgets week-to-week and find it difficult to bulk buy.

“And our store colleagues have done much more than their day job.

“They’ve also played a vital role, delivering care packages to other frontline workers and those in need in their communities.

“But even though we’ve kept serving customers, we know we’re at our best as part of a vibrant thriving high street and that’s why we’re looking forward to our neighbours reopening in the coming weeks.

“Healthy town centres are the lifeblood of our economy and our communities.

“It may have been tough for many retailers before this crisis and it’s more important than ever that we make sure we encourage customers to say hi to their high streets as we return to business-as-unusual.”
