Portugal package holiday prices slashed in Algarve amid future ‘air bridge’ plans

Portugal is a popular destination with Britons looking for an affordable, sunny break in Europe. The country is most known for its Algarve region which is home to glorious beaches and blazing heat. Currently, Britons are not permitted to travel abroad unless it is for an “essential” purpose.

Portugal’s ambassador to the UK, Manuel Lobo Antunes spoke on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme about the possibility of an “air bridge” deal.

He said: “There was very good news for you, for us, for Europe that the alert system has come from four to three and that means a significant improvement in the control of the pandemic here in the UK.

“We think that the situation is under control and we would be happy to receive, as before, as many British as possible.”

Many Britons are looking forward to escaping the UK in favour of a sunnier destination this summer.

Although July flights are likely to be cheap, many Britons may be reluctant to travel to Portugal once it reopens if package holiday prices are extortionate.

In which case, there may be some good news for Britons looking for an affordable 2020 break this year.

Currently, package deals are for October are beginning at just £78 per person for seven nights.

Airbnb is offering up some of the cheapest deals.

A seven night stay at a self-catered hotel with return flights from London Stansted to the Algarve will cost you just £155 per person on October 20.

Current Foreign and Commonwealth (FCO) for Portugal states: “A state of emergency was declared on 18 March by the Portuguese government.

“On 30 April, the Portuguese government announced the transition to a state of public calamity and a three-stage de-escalation plan to gradually ease current confinement and mobility measures.”
