Since the coronavirus pandemic hit and lockdown measures came into place, Arthur Hughes, 78, has been missing his daily walk on the beach with his dog Cassie.

But for his 78th birthday, Arthur’s daughter Michelle Stockham, 52, wanted to give him a special treat.

Michelle contacted police, who opened the barrier to the beach in Conwy, North Wales, that Arthur has walked along every day for the last five years.

For his birthday only, lockdown was lifted to allow Arthur to enjoy the sea air on his big day.

Michelle said: ‘Dad is not in the best of health and hasn’t been his usual cheery self since not being able to get out, so when the officers arranged to meet us at the car park it made his day very special.

‘He had a lovely time. He just sat on the bench in his favourite place overlooking Deganwy with Cassie and reflected on things.’

Michelle has now thanked officers from North Wales Police for helping to make the special day happen.

She said: ‘He absolutely loved it and I can’t thank the officers enough for their kindness.

‘They have gone above and beyond to make one man and his dog very happy.

‘What they have done means so much.”

A spokeswoman for the force said: ‘It was a lovely request and we loved the opportunity to help the family make Arthur’s day special.’
