Poldark sadly came to an end this year but one of its leading stars, Eleanor Tomlinson, admits she has ‘worried’ that she’ll be typecast as the character for the rest of her career.

The 27-year-old played Demelza Poldark, wife of Captain Ross Poldark, alongside Aidan Turner for five series.

Fans were devastated when the hit BBC One series came to an end in August and, needless to say, Eleanor is missing the show already.

‘I miss the people and I miss the character, she was amazing but then I feel like it hasn’t left me because I’m lucky enough to carry it into other jobs that I do,’ Eleanor told Metro.co.uk exclusively at the launch of Loyalty & Love, an exhibition of photographs by Rankin shot in Marriott Bonvoy Hotels, in London on Wednesday night.

‘It’s amazing to be part of something that people have seen, and if someone has seen it I’m always so flattered that they watched it.

‘It’s just lovely and great to have that behind me going forward.’

When asked if she fears viewers will struggle to see her as any character other than Demelza, Eleanor admitted: ‘I did worry about that, but that’s what I’m focusing on now. Trying to branch out and try different roles. I’m just lucky to be working and I’m so glad that I am.’

Viewers were swept away by the on-screen romance between Aidan and Eleanor’s Ross and Demelza respectively, and they’ll be pleased to know the actors are still real life besties.

‘Yeah of course. We’re actors, we get these amazing people, create relationships and these amazing characters together,’ she explained.

‘I think what Aidan and I created for Ross and Demelza will be immortalised in that period of time in which it was played, and now it’s time to move on which is lovely.’

Reflecting on the impact of the show and the characters, Eleanor continued: ‘I think with the characters that we had to portray, they had such an interesting and intricate relationship.

‘It was all really on the page and to have the opportunity to work for five seasons on something where you can grow as characters and as people – I was 21 when we started, I’m 27 now so I’ve really grown up on it and I guess so has he as well.

‘It’s just an organic thing that happens when you start a long series like that, it’s just lovely.’

Up next for Eleanor is a brand new BBC One sci-fi drama, The War of the Worlds, which takes place in Edwardian England and sees martians, in the form of giant machines, attack Earth on the hunt for resources.

Teasing the drama, which also stars Rafe Spall and Robert Carlyle, Eleanor said: ‘I really loved it, the crew and cast were amazing. It was fun to do something that was kind of high action. I just loved it, can’t wait to see it.

‘Poldark isn’t exactly high action but in some ways it is. In terms of getting into the mindset, it’s just a completely different character. It’s something that you discover and find along the way and work with the other actors, the director. It’s fun.’

She added optimistically: ‘It’s exciting, life is fun.’

Eleanor attended the launch of Loyalty & Love, an exhibition of photographs by Rankin shot in Marriott Bonvoy Hotels across Europe, at the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel on 2 October in London.
