Pointless: ‘I’m so sorry’ Richard Osman apologises to Alexander Armstrong over joke

Alexander made the quip over a round on the BBC quiz which concerned big books.

One such book was A Game of Thrones, part of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Fire and Ice series.

After a Pointless contestant correctly named the book, Alexander joked about the author’s name.

He declared: “Now I’ve watched Game of Thrones I know how you’re meant to pronounce that guy’s name. It’s George ‘ah ahhh’ Martin.”

However, Richard admitted he didn’t understand the context as he had never watched the hugely popular programme.

“I don’t get the reference because I haven’t ever watched it,” he said.

To which Alexander replied: “Ah I see, a lot of twists and turns there. I think one of my best gags ever actually, that one.”

“No way. Oh, I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry,” Richard retorted to his co-star.

“George ‘ah ahhh’ Martin,” Alexander repeated once again before adding: “It gets funnier with repetition, actually.”

Richard added: “I’ll watch it and ring you in about six months and go, ‘Mate, that George R.R. Martin, terrific’.”

Mandy continued: “Yes it is. 17.”

Richard then piped up to ask a question to the contestant.

He asked: “Can I just ask, what was 16 and what will 18 be?”

Mandy explained: “16 was when we went skiing and I think 18 will be when we go Segway riding.”

Pointless airs weekdays at 5.15pm on BBC One.
