Pochettino drops Sessegnon hint for Liverpool vs Tottenham as he offers Lo Celso update

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has hinted that summer signing Ryan Sessegnon could make an appearance against Liverpool on Sunday.

Sessegnon has yet to play for Spurs, having sustained a hamstring injury before the season started after joining from Fulham.

Pochettino has also had to make do without his other two new boys Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso at various points of the season due to injuries.

But Spurs play league leaders Liverpool on Sunday (4.30pm), where the Reds will be looking to keep their unbeaten record intact.

And ahead of the game, Pochettino has hinted that his side may be boosted by the return of Sessegnon, who signed for £30million in the summer.

“Ryan Sessegnon has been back in training for a week, is ready to take his place on the bench on Sunday?” he said.

“Maybe he will be available but it’s always the same – when one is in, one is out.

“If you plan for him to be on the bench you need to put someone out of the bench. We have only 18 players, 29 now with Michel [Vorm].

“That is a problem but it is about waiting, being consistent and showing his quality and to wait for the opportunity that he will have during the season.”

Pochettino also spoke about Lo Celso, who played briefly during Spurs 5-0 thrashing of Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League in midweek.

“[Lo Celso] only played 10 minutes. I understand people want to see new faces but he needs time like Tanguy or Ryan Sessegnon,” he added.

“I understand of course that people want to see new faces and different players but we have plenty of players – we have Dele, Tanguy, Christian Eriksen, Lamela, Harry Winks, a lot of midfielders in that position.

“He needs to wait for his opportunity. Of course he played 10 mins after his issue but it’s all about performance.

“For sure he performed well and he showed at the training ground that he deserved to play. I am a coach who tries to be fair.”

Tottenham will be looking to pick up a first win in the Premier League since they beat Southampton at the end of September.

Liverpool haven’t lost in the league, however, since January, when Manchester City beat them 2-1.
