THERESA May faces demands to quit immediately – after senior backbenchers told her she was now “part of the problem”.

Executives from the 1922 backbench committee told the PM in No10 that the mood was turning against her.

Theresa May is being urged to quit immediately as she is damaging her party and now part of the Brexit problem

Sources claimed she sat in stony silence as they warned of the “damage” she was doing to the party.

It came as arch Eurosceptic Mark Francois published a letter of no confidence in the PM and demand a “re run” of the contest to get her out.

Furious Brexiteers warned Theresa May at a crunch meeting in No10 that a customs union would be “unacceptable” to the Tory party.

The PM invited in members of the powerful 1922 Tory committee of backbench MPs – led by party kingmaker Sir Graham Brady.

CUSTOMS UNION RED LINES

They “made clear” that the party would not accept a customs union, which Mrs May is expected to offer Jeremy Corbyn in order to get a Brexit deal over the line.

One of Tory MPs in the meeting said the PM “understood” their concerns and insisted her offer to Labour was “not a blank cheque”.

But the backbench Tories said Mrs May gave no clue as to her next move.

DESPERATE BID

The tense meeting in No10 came after Brexiteers mounted a desperate last-ditch bid to force through a No Deal by submitting a fresh wave of letters of no confidence letters in Mrs May.

He and fellow Brexiteer James Duddridge claimed as many as 100 letters may be sent in by the time PM lands in Brussels for her key Brexit summit – and show EU leaders how little authority she has back home.

The EU will see she has lost all remnants of her authority back home and decide not to give her an extension

Mark Francois

Mr Francois told The Sun: “The idea is that while she’s in Brussels she receives a huge vote of no confidence from her own MPs.

“The EU will see she has lost all remnants of her authority back home and decide not to give her an extension. So we’ll be out by Friday.”

In a blistering letter of Mr Francois claimed Mrs May’s handling of Brexit was threatening the “existential future of our party and the destiny of our country”.

But he was mocked by the People’s Vote campaign after demanding a re-run of the no confidence vote that Mrs May won in December.

Mr Duddridge said: “The prime minister no longer commands the authority of her party, her government or even her cabinet. On that basis she cannot go on.”

They also called for an “indicative vote of no confidence” in the PM if she refuses to step down voluntarily.

But Sir Graham ruled out that option after meeting with the PM in Downing Street yesterday.
