Plusnet is increasing the cost of its BT Sport packages

The change, which comes into force from September 17, means customers will have to shell out double the amount they do now.

Prices will go up from £60 to £120 a year for all Plusnet customers with the BT Sport App and BT Sport channel.

While Plusnet did not disclose specific customer figures, they said the number of people hit by the increase would roll into the thousands.

The price hike hasn’t gone unnoticed by furious consumers with people venting their rage on social media.

A Plusnet spokesperson said: “At Plusnet we believe in giving our customers the best service and value possible.

“That’s why our BT Sport App and BT Sport channel package will continue to give customers great content, at one of the most competitive prices in the market.”

As all BT Sport packages with Plusnet are on rolling 30 day contracts, customers can cancel their subscription at any time with no charge.

The Plusnet customer service line can be reached on 0800 432 0200.

The majority of major broadband providers give customers the option to add on BT Sport for an additional monthly charge, so it’s worth shopping around for the best deal.

What you to do if you’re unhappy about the Plusnet price hike

PLUSNET customers with BT Sport might be wondering if anything can be done about the upcoming price hike.

While it’s not guaranteed that you’ll get a better deal elsewhere, there are some steps you can take to make sure you’re getting the best value for money.

  • Use comparison websites to check what other providers are offering. uSwitch and Compare the Market are reputable websites that will bring up the latest deals from a wide range of providers to check you’re getting the best rate. Simply put in your personal details and select exactly what you want your package to include, for example, if you also want broadband or a phone deal, and let the sites do the rest.
  • If you do find a better deal, be sure to let Plusnet know about it. While haggling is not a definite way to make a company lower its price, it’s always worth telling them about a better deal you found elsewhere. Always make it clear how much you’re happy to be paying a month and see if Plusnet can meet this price. The Plusnet customer service line can be reached on 0800 432 0200.
  • If Plusnet cannot match the price of another deal, you can cancel your BT Sport subscription at no charge. The BT Sport package is based on a rolling 30 day contract so customers can get out of it at any time. The Plusnet cancellation number is 0800 013 2632, or customers can call 500 from their Plusnet mobile.

Existing BT customers can add on BT Sport for an extra £5 a month on top of their current TV or broadband bill, but do note that you’ll be locked into an 18 month contract.

This adds up to an extra £90 for the entire contract period.

New BT customers have the option to sign up to BT Sport with BT TV and broadband for £39.99 a month on a 24-month contract, with the total cost over this time adding up to £959.76.

There’s also an activation and delivery fee of £69.99 and after the contract period ends, the price jumps up to £47.99.

If you’re a Sky TV with BT broadband customer, it’s possible to add BT Sport for £7.50 a month on a 12-month contract, meaning an extra £112.50.

But if you’re only signed up to Sky TV and not BT, you’ll need to pay an extra £25 a month for 12 months, plus an upfront activation cost of £20, to get access to BT Sport.

New Virgin Media customers can sign up to a 12-month deal costing £53 a month for over 230 channels including BT Sport.

This adds up to £636 for the contract period.

Those already with TalkTalk TV can add on BT Sport from £25 a month on a 12-month contract, a total extra price of £300 over on top of your bill for this timeframe.

Alternatively, EE customers can get three months free access to the BT Sport app, after this it’s an extra £5 a month on a rolling contract.

BT Sport customers can currently watch UEFA Champions League and Europa League matches, 52 Premier League matches as well as European and Premiership Rugby Union.

They also have access to European and Premiership Rugby Union, every UFC fight, cricket, tennis, MotoGP and more.

Plusnet isn’t the only provider hiking prices, as we reveal how to avoid paying as Virgin Media adds up to £54 a year to bills.

BT is also putting up its prices and we revealed how you can change or cancel your service.

But the news was looking better for Vodafone customers earlier this month when the phone provider turned on its UK 5G network.
