Jonny Bairstow scored a century to help England beat India at Edgbaston and boost their hopes of reaching the semi-finals of the World Cup.

Bairstow shared a 160-run opening partnership with the returning Jason Roy (66) and Ben Stokes made 79 off just 54 balls to propel England to 337-7.

In reply, India opener Rohit Sharma posted a ton and captain Virat Kohli scored 66 but England still triumphed by 31 runs with Liam Plunkett taking three wickets.

The win means England’s World Cup hopes remain in their hands ahead of their final group match against New Zealand on Wednesday. India are almost guaranteed a place in the semi-finals despite suffering their first defeat.

England

Jonny Bairstow – 5/5

Was vocal about the perceived lack of support following the Australia defeat but let his batting do the talking today, scoring his eighth ODI ton. Caught up after a subdued start, hitting ten fours and six maximums in a superb knock.

Jason Roy – 5/5

Marked his return to the side with an explosive fifty. Shared a brilliant opening partnership of 160 with Bairstow.

Joe Root – 2/5

Only hit two boundaries from his 54 deliveries. But his 44 looked better as the match went on and India’s batters struggled. Put down Rohit early on in the slips.

Eoin Morgan – 1/5

Succumbed to a short ball for the second game in a row after a scratchy nine-ball stay. Got his team selection spot on, however.

Ben Stokes – 5/5

Produced the counter-attacking innings his team needed after India threatened to win back momentum in the middle overs. Bludgeoned his fourth fifty of the tournament.

Jos Buttler – 3/5

Smashed 20 off eight balls in a bright but brief cameo. Could and perhaps should have been pushed up the order after England’s fine start.

Chris Woakes – 4/5

Picked up the early wicket and bowled three successive maidens to put England on top from the outset. Returned to dismiss centurion Rohit and also produced a brilliant catch in the field.

Liam Plunkett – 4/5

Justified his inclusion in the side with a tidy and effective spell. Claimed the prize scalp of Kohli before also getting the better of Pant and Pandya.

Adil Rashid – 1/5

Taken out of the attack after just five overs. Was milked by Rohit and Kohli, two brilliant players of spin.

Jofra Archer – 3/5

Bowled well at the start and end of India’s innings despite the concerns over his fitness in the build-up to the match. Saw Rohit dropped off his bowling early on. A classy bowler.

Mark Wood – 1/5

Has been one of England’s best bowlers during this World Cup but was not at his best today, finishing the match with expensive figures.

India

Rohit Sharma – 4/5

Looked curiously out of touch early on but finally found some rhythm to make his third century of the campaign.

KL Rahul – 1/5

Fell for a nine-ball duck after sitting on the sidelines for most of England’s innings because of a back injury.

Virat Kohli – 4/5

Cruised to a fifth consecutive half-century. Continues to look in great nick and was devastated to depart for 66.

Rishabh Pant – 2/5

Appeared flustered on his World Cup debut and made 32 before being caught in the deep.

Kedar Jadhav – 1/5

Faced an almost impossible task when he came to the crease.

MS Dhoni – 1/5

Plodded his way to an unbeaten 41. India were heading to a defeat but it was a curious innings nevertheless.

Hardik Pandya – 3/5

Briefly gave India hope with a blistering 45. Timed the ball as well as anyone. Has endured a frustrating tournament with the ball and was targeted today.

Kuldeep Yadav – 2/5

Conceded 60 from his first six overs but broke England’s devastating opening stand and completed his spell for the cost of just 12 more runs.

Mohammed Shami – 4/5

Threatened up top without any luck, before returning and take five wickets. Slightly expensive overall but limited the damage at the death.

Yuzvendra Chahal – 1/5

Recorded his most expensive figures, receiving regular punishment from Roy, Bairstow and Stokes.

Jasprit Bumrah – 4/5

India’s stand-out bowler. Only claimed one wicket but restricted England superbly with his unerring accuracy and deft variations.
