Pinterest says garden rooms and coffee stations are going to be big interior trends in 2020

Once the Christmas tree is taken down and the tinsel is packed away, your home can feel a little basic.

That’s why it’s the perfect time to hit refresh on your interiors.

Handily enough, Pinterest has stepped up to guide us through the choppy waters of making our rooms feel new again, having released a list of the home-based trends they reckon will be big in 2020.

Don’t rush to tick off every trend on the list – do too many and you’ll look like someone who prioritises what’s cool over what they actually like.

Ready? Let’s get into it.

Home cinemas

Not everyone has space for their own cinema (Picture: Getty)

This is one of those trends that clearly isn’t doable for everyone.

You’d need to have a home big enough to have a spare room fit for a massive TV screen and cosy seating.

We reckon a more reasonable option is a movie corner, where you can stack blankets and pillows ready to be pulled out to make watching Netflix in bed extra cosy.

Audio rooms

Perhaps an audio corner will do the trick (Picture: Getty)

Again, this is a pretty bougie one, and a corner of a room would work just as well as dedicating a massive chunk of space.

The idea of audio rooms is having a space of your home specifically for listening to music.

Think fancy speakers, a comfortable seat to recline in, and likely a collection of vinyls for your vintage record player.

Homebrewing

Prepare for everyone you know to start their own microbrewery (Picture: Getty)

Next year everyone will be making their own beer and kombucha, right in their kitchen.

Not all these drinks will be, well, drinkable.

Best of luck surviving all your friends asking if they should quit their job and start their own brewery. They should not.

Granny pods

Fancy sheds, basically (Picture: Getty)

Granny pods are a cutesy name for an outhouse.

They’re basically big sheds that have been turned into the perfect living space for a grandparent or other relative, so they can stay close by without invading your personal space.

Coffee stations

A kettle won’t cut it (Picture: Getty)

Far beyond your usual kettle set up, in 2020 you’ll need to prove your dedication to caffeine with a special coffee corner of your kitchen.

We’re talking an espresso machine, freshly ground beans, and a drip coffee maker for your cold brew.

At least you can justify this expense by saying you’ll never buy Starbucks again.

Indoor water fountains

Ah, so peaceful (Picture: Getty)

Go big and statement with a massive glass partition in the middle of the room, trickling water to mimic rain on the window.

Or just get a little rock fountain. That’s just as lovely.

Homemade baby food

Oh wait, you *buy* baby food? (Picture: Getty)

The latest bit of parenting oneupmanship is crafting your baby’s food from scratch rather than relying on those little jars of mushed up veg.

We won’t judge if you dive right into this trend only to realise that it’s a load of time and faff and immediately give up.

Garden room

Bring nature indoors (Picture: Getty)

Again, swap room for corner if your home is spatially challenged.

This trend isn’t particularly surprising. Millennials love house plants.

But rather than being content with a monstera in every corner, the thing to do now is make a mini jungle in one area.

So few of us have actual gardens, so we’ll have to make our own green oasis indoors.

Working from home wear

Go for soft layers (Picture: Getty)

Freelancers are no longer allowed to just wear pyjamas all day.

Now they must have special outfits to get them into the working mindset.

Honestly, we think it’s perfectly fine if that special outfit is just daytime pyjamas that you change into after a shower.

But we’d recommend cosy loungewear in soft textures as the next level up.

Indoor microgreens

Grow your own salad (Picture: Getty)

Alongside your usual houseplants, you should also be growing herbs or salad fixings, like cress.

Don’t feel like a massive failure if your basil plant immediately wilts and dies. These plants are trickier to look after than people think.
