Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan, 54, took to Twitter and hit out at Shailja Patel for her comments on the micro-blogging site. It comes as Prime Minister Boris Johnson remains “stable” in intensive care for a second night following his ongoing coronavirus symptoms.
Piers retweeted the playwright’s initial tweet which read: “Boris Johnson’s treatment is taking staff and hospital resources away from other COVID-19 patients. Some may die as a result. The chin that Boris Johnson demanded of the UK population… was never going to be his.”
Shailja accompanied her tweet with a link to an article which highlighted the UK Government’s response to providing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to NHS workers.
Piers wrote in view of his 7.3 million followers: “What a disgusting tweet. This crisis is bringing out the best & worst in people – this is an example of the very worst.”
Fans inundated the comment section to share their thoughts on what she’d said.
One person commented: “This is awful, Boris Johnson deserves the treatment as much as anyone else, we need him back and fighting fit to serve our country and get us through this pandemic.”
“At the point Boris contracted COVID-19 he ceased to be Prime Minister and became a patient and like any other patient is deserving of care by our wonderful NHS,” another social media user replied.
While a third person added: “I expect the doctors and nurses treating him just see him as another patient who needs saving.”
It comes as Boris made an appearance on ITV’s This Morning last month, discussing advice he had received from health experts about delaying the spread of the virus.
Phillip Schofield asked: “Is the delay essentially trying to spread this out so it doesn’t all happen at once and overwhelm the NHS?”
The Prime Minister talked about the various theories he had received about the action he should take to slow the spread of COVID-19.
“Well it’s a very, very important question, and that’s where a lot of the debate has been and one of the theories is, that perhaps you could take it on the chin,” Boris replied.
“Take it all in one go and allow the disease, as it were, to move through the population, without taking as many draconian measures.”
He added: “I think we need to strike a balance, I think it is very important, we’ve got a fantastic NHS, we will give them all the support that they need, we will make sure that they have all preparations, all the kit that they need for us to get through it.
“But I think it would be better if we took all the measures that we can now to stop the peak of the disease being as difficult for the NHS as it might be, I think there are things that we may be able to do.”
The Prime Minister has since been taken to St Thomas’s hospital in central London 13 days after he tested positive for coronavirus.
Forein secretary Dominic Raab has since taken over Boris’ ministerial duties.
