Piers Morgan slams 'ageist' Channel 4 bosses for sacking Crufts' Peter Purves, 80

Piers Morgan was up in arms this morning as former Crufts presenter Peter Purves appeared on GMB.

The 80-year-old was recently sacked by Channel 4, after 41 years presenting the legendary dog show.

Chatting to Peter on Good Morning Britain, Piers was fuming over the network’s decision, branding it as “ageist” and “cruel”.

He declared: “”41 years – he’s the voice of that show! I grew up with you Peter, that was my era as a young person. You did so much for us there.”

Peter explained: “Channel 4 wants a younger presentation team.

“I’m not worried about not being on television but I don’t believe not being a certain age…I should not be dismissed.”

The former Blue Peter presenter admitted that “there’s a void” there now that he’s been sacked.

He confessed that Channel 4 bosses had said “we are always refreshing the show” in an effort to defend their decision.

Getting irate, Piers declared that the move was “utterly ridiculous, cruel unnecessary, and it will go against most fans of Crufts”.

He went on: “You’re a legend of my generation. It’s just ageist.”

Finally, he added: “I’m just sorry you’ve been given this horrible news just before Christmas.”

Over on Twitter, viewers were just as furious about the news, and blasted the decision to let Peter go.

One said: “Totally agree with you, he has been a huge part of our lives. Disgraceful of Crufts.”

A second added: “Peter Purves, a legend for my generation, put out to seed by Channel 4 – scandalous.”

While a third chipped in: “Poor Peter Purves! Ageism goes right to the top, clearly.”

Good Morning Britain airs on weekdays at 6am on ITV.
