Piers Morgan has revealed that his mother has been self-isolating from the coronavirus pandemic for eight days.

The Good Morning Britain presenter, who has been at the forefront of holding the government to account during the global health crisis, let loose that his 75-year-old mum Gabrielle has been following guidelines.

Sharing a picture, taken from the other side of a glass door, Piers wrote: ‘Day 8 of self-isolation captivity & my mother hasn’t fully explained why she’s wearing a scarf inside.’

Last week, it was announced by the government that people over 70 will need to ‘shield’ themselves from social contact and stay at home for four months to help fight against Covid-19.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said it is a ‘very big ask’, but it is a measure which is for their own ‘self-protection’.

In an acknowledgement of the almost wartime measures being introduced, Mr Hancock said the steps are ‘very, very significant and they will disrupt the ordinary lives of almost everybody in the country’.

On Monday night, Prime Minister Boris Johnson ordered a lockdown of the UK for three weeks, telling people they must ‘stay at home’ or face a fine.

Coronavirus UK lockdown: key points

The key points of Boris Johnson’s historic address are as follows:

People will only be able to leave their home for shopping, one form of exercise a day for example a run, walk or cycle, any medical need, to provide care or help a vulnerable person, or to go to work.

Updating the nation following a Cobra meeting with cabinet ministers, he said: ‘You should not be meeting friends. If your friends ask you to meet, you should say No.’
