Piers Morgan has led celebrity reactions to Matt Hancock resigning after the Health Secretary was pictured passionately kissing his aide, Gina Coladangelo, despite being married.

Not holding back, the former Good Morning Britain presenter wrote: ‘Didn’t resign for his abject failures on PPE, testing & care homes that led to Britain having the worst covid death toll in Europe.

‘Did resign for being caught snogging his mistress. Pretty much sums up Matt Hancock. As the Prime Minister said: “Totally f*cking hopeless.”‘

Jedward added: ‘Matt Hancock has resigned! Now it’s just him and his hand c**k’.

Lily Allen, meanwhile, shared a prediction as she tweeted: ‘Matt hancock to replace Andrew Neil on GB News,’ amid the reporter’s break from his news channel.

Author Michael Rosen, who battled Covid-19 in intensive care, said: ‘Dear Mr Hancock Before you shut the door behind you, can I have my left eye and left ear back? Regards Michael Rosen’.

Good Morning Britain presenter Adil Ray said: ‘Hancock lied about PPE, lied about care homes, lied about a world beating t & t [Track and Trace] system & lied about data to justify not placing India on the red list. In the end it was his lies about keeping to the rules that finished him. But, it is no justice for the families of the bereaved.’

Mr Hancock has resigned after he was seen locked in a passionate embrace with Ms Coladangelo in CCTV footage obtained by The Sun. He has been married to his wife Martha for 15 years.

He apologised for ‘breaching social distancing guidance’, with Downing Street saying that the Prime Minister ‘considered the matter closed.’

However, in a new statement, Mr Hancock said that the Government ‘owe it to people who have sacrificed so much in this pandemic to be honest when we have let them down’.

He continued: ‘The last thing I would want is for my private life to distract attention from the single-minded focus that is leading us out of this crisis.

‘I want to reiterate my apology for breaking the guidance, and apologise to my family and loved ones for putting them through this. I also need (to) be with my children at this time.’

Mr Hancock also released a video on Twitter apologising for his conduct.

In response, the Prime Minister wrote: ‘You should leave office very proud of what you have achieved – not just in tackling the pandemic, but even before Covid-19 struck us.’

Sajid Javid has now taken over the role of Health Secretary.
