Piers Morgan’s impassioned speech about the NHS’ reliance on overseas workers has gone viral with millions of views of the video.
The Good Morning Britain host was discussing the NHS as frontline healthcare workers across the country battle the coronavirus pandemic on Tuesday morning.
With thousands dying from the virus and Prime Minister Boris Johnson being treated in intensive care at St Thomas’ Hospital for ‘persistent symptoms’ of Covid-19, Piers spoke about the immigrant workforce that had bolstered the NHS response to the virus.
Speaking about the bravery of NHS workers and those from overseas that are part of the workforce, Piers said: “A lovely Filipino woman who works for me – she was on Zoom to her friends yesterday, and they all worked for the NHS.
“I didn’t know that. I didn’t realise every single one of them works for the NHS.”
He added: “All her friends work for the NHS. We forget about this extraordinary workforce which comes from all around the world.”
Piers then gave a shout out to all of her friends, who worked for hospitals across London, including the NHS Nightingale facility, which has just opened.
Morgan branded them “amazing” unsung heroes, adding: “They’re helping everybody right now. Outstanding care.”
In the speech that has been viewed nearly four million times, he concluded: “It’s worth bearing in mind when we talk about immigrants in this country, these are the immigrants currently saving people’s lives. Coming here and actually enriching our country and doing an amazing job.”
Tweeting about the response to his thoughts later on Tuesday, Piers wrote: “This clearly hit a nerve with people. Good.”
His speech came a couple days after the Queen issued a message to healthcare workers to mark World Health Day on Sunday.
She said in a statement: “On the occasion of World Health Day, I want to thank all those in the healthcare profession for your selfless commitment and diligence as you undertake vitally important roles to protect and improve the health and well-being of people across the Commonwealth, and across the world.
“In testing times, we often observe that the best of the human spirit comes to the fore; the dedication to service of countless nurses, midwives and other health workers, in these most challenging of circumstances, is an example to us all.
“My family and I send our enduring appreciation and good wishes.”
