Following on from Piers’ tweet, one responded to the presenter: “God bless his soul,” while another said: “Very sad.”

Another added: “This brings it home more than ever, we are all in this together… RIP Doc and thank you from everyone you have saved.” (sic)

It was also confirmed that Split actor, James McAvoy, 40, donated £275,000 to a crowdfunding group who are working to raise money to buy equipment for the NHS staff.

According to The Guardian, the group has now raised “more than £440,000”, which has now overtaken “the first target of £200,000”.
