Piers Morgan brands Kim Kardashian ‘complicit’ in ‘endorsing sick husband’ Kanye West

Piers has some thoughts on Kim’s statement on Kanye

Piers Morgan has shared his thoughts following Kim Kardashian’s statement on husband, and presidential hopeful, Kanye West, addressing his bipolar episode this week, labelling her ‘complicit’.

The Good Morning Britain presenter is no stranger to passing on his opinion when it comes to the Kardashians, and earlier this week suggested in his column Kim do something on what Piers called Kanye’s ‘humiliating public self-implosion’.

Kanye worried fans earlier this week after his first presidential rally, in which he made startling claims about eldest daughter North, as well as Harriet Tubman, before turning on wife Kim on Twitter and claiming he’d been ‘trying to divorce’ her for a year.

In a series of concerning tweets from the rapper, he also compared mother-in-law Kris Jenner to North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un, and called her a white supremacist. During his presidential campaign launch earlier this week, he has also claimed that Kim considered an abortion while pregnant with their daughter, North.

Yesterday Kim released a statement, asking for ‘compassion’ for her husband (which echoed calls from many others to rethink how they address Kanye’s manic episode), standing by him in the wake of the now-deleted messages, and the earlier rally.

The journalist agreed that Kanye needed our compassion and empathy, ‘even if there’s something vaguely ridiculous about a Kardashian asking for privacy’.

However, referencing her statement, Piers labelled her past behaviour, in which she had backed her husband’s recent announcement of running for president in the upcoming election, ‘complicit’.

He wrote in his latest column for Mail Online: ‘But none of her eloquent words yesterday, which attracted widespread praise and sympathy, give Kim Kardashian a pass for her complicit behaviour from the moment Kanye declared he was running for president on July 5.’

Speaking about Kanye’s explanation to David Letterman last year about what happens during his bipolar episodes, in which he said ‘You pretty much don’t trust anyone’, Piers claimed someone who went through such a thing ‘should not be President of the United States’.

He added: ‘Yet, Kim Kardashian watched her sick husband say he intended to run for president and enthusiastically endorsed it on the same day by retweeting his announcement with an emoji of an American flag.’

To the GMB host, he accused Kim of putting the ‘gleeful’ thought of becoming First Lady alongside Kanye ‘above the country’s national interests’.

Piers agreed with Kim when she said in her statement Kanye’s mental health shouldn’t ‘diminish or invalidate his dreams, no matter how big or unobtainable they may feel to some,’ and insisted he wasn’t perpetuating stigma around mental health issues.

However, ultimately he questioned Kanye’s presidential run.

Piers’ thoughts follows Kim’s statement on her husband, after she shared a lengthy statement to Instagram on Wednesday.

She wrote: ‘As many of you know, Kanye has bipolar disorder. Anyone who has this or has a loved one in their life who does, knows how complicated and painful it is to understand. I’ve never spoken publicly about how this has affected us at home because I am very protective of our children and Kanye’s right to privacy. But today, I feel like I should comment on it because of the stigma and misconceptions about mental health.

‘Those that understand mental illness or even compulsive behaviour know that the family is powerless unless the member is a minor. People who are unaware or far removed from this experience can be judgemental and not understand that the individual themselves have to engage in the process of getting help no matter how hard family and friends try.

‘I understand Kanye is subject to criticism because he is a public figure and his actions at times can cause strong opinions and emotions. He is a brilliant but complicated person who on top of the pressure being an artist and a black man, who experienced the painful loss of his mother, and has to deal with the pressure and isolation that is heightened by his bi-polar disorder.

‘Those who are close with Kanye know his heart and understand his words sometimes do not align with his intentions. ‘Living with bi-polar disorder does not diminish or invalidate his dreams and his creative ideas, no matter how big or unobtainable they may feel to some. That is part of his genius and as we have all witnessed, many of his dreams have come true.’

‘We as a society talk about giving grace to the issue of mental health as a whole, however we should also give it to the individuals who are living with in times when they need it the most. I kindly ask that the media and public give us the compassion and empathy that is needed so that we can get through this. Thank you for those who have expressed concern for Kanye’s wellbeing and for your understanding.

‘With love and gratitude, Kim Kardashian West.’
