Piers Morgan and Hugh Grant at one another’s necks as they sling mud in war of words

Piers Morgan and Hugh Grant are still evidently at one another’s necks as they fling the mud on social media in the lead up to tomorrow’s election.

The pair have long been foes, having gone head to head on Twitter in the past over both their vocal political beliefs.

Now, on the eve of the general election, the Good Morning Britain presenter and Love Actually star have hit some low blows, with Piers posting Hugh’s decades-old mug shot…again.

It all started on Wednesday when Piers shared his thoughts on Steve Coogan and Hugh’s political prowess, after the former appeared on Sky News and spoke politics.

‘Who gives a flying f*ck what Coogan & Grant have to say about this election?’ Piers wrote, referencing Hugh, who had earlier been photographed canvassing. ‘Honestly, the stupefying pomposity of these clowns trying to thwart democracy is beyond parody.’

Obviously Hugh, who goes by the profile @HackedOffHugh, was not going to let that one lie, after being name-dropped by the former newspaper editor.

He replied: ‘You’ve changed. You used to care so much about what actors said that the paper you edited hacked Nigel Havers phone for years while his wife was dying of cancer.’

That little message caused Piers to write: ‘No journalist who worked for me at the Daily Mirror has ever been charged with or convicted of phone-hacking.

‘YOU however have a criminal record for lewd conduct with a hooker in Hollywood. So I suggest you put the halo away, ‘Saint’ Hugh.’

Piers, who was previously editor of the Daily Mirror for nine years until 2004, has long denied accusations of phone hacking and of knowledge his journalists were hacking voicemails.

He spoke at the Leveson inquiry into phone hacking and also said in an interview: ‘I’ve never hacked a phone nor told anybody to hack a phone.’

Hugh, still keen for an online battle, responded: ‘Your paper caved and paid off millions to hundreds of victims of phone hacking. And issued grovelling apology. Those were the civil cases. As for criminal charges ..I refer to my old friends Mr Tick and Mrs Tock. Happy Xmas.’

It was at this stage Piers put a pin in proceedings by tweeting the infamous mug shot of Hugh, taken in June 1995, when Hugh was arrested near Sunset Boulevard for receiving oral sex from Divine Brown, real name Estella Marie Thompson, in his car.

Even though Hugh, totally trumping the lot of potential trolls, uploaded the image earlier this week to beat everyone to the punch.

In 2013 the actor was among a group of 17 well-known public figures to settle phone hacking legal claims at the High Court. The British film star received a public apology and undisclosed damages from News Group Newspapers (NGN), the publishers of defunct newspaper News of the World.

Since then, he has been a vocal campaigner and supporter of Hacked Off, which goes against press intrusion following the discovery of widespread phone hacking by British tabloids.
