Piers Morgan: ‘A good run’ GMB host reacts as co-star steps down from long-serving role

Good Morning Britain star Ben Shephard, 44, took to Twitter to tell his 705,000 followers he has stepped down from Goals on Sunday after nine years and won’t be returning next season. In view of his 705,000 followers, he wrote: “Morning all- So after 9 seasons + nearly 400 shows the time has come to hang up my @GoalsOnSunday boots. I’ve loved working with @chris_kammy + know we’ll have more adventures to come! Thanks to our viewers, guests, + @SkySports it’s has, as Kammy would say been ‘Unbelievable!’”.

Piers Morgan, 53, shared his tweet, writing: “Great run, Mr Shephard – congrats!”

Ben insisted his reasons for leaving the show are to spend more time with his family.

The presenter, who shares sons Jack, 14, and Sam, 12, with his wife Anna Perks, said the couple’s teenagers are “at an age when they need me around”.

He told The Mirror: “Now they’re teenagers, Sam is taller than me and Jack is not far behind, which I’m trying to come to terms with.

“They’re consumed by school work all week, the weekend is the only time I can spend with them.”

He added: “Jack got upset recently because I haven’t been able to go to his cricket matches.

“We had conversations and I reassured him it would soon be over.

“Both have football and rugby on Sunday mornings, which I’ve never been able to go to because of work.”

Ahead of stepping down from his role, the host’s gruelling schedule meant filming for his various television shows six days a week.

His presenting duties also include ITV afternoon show Tipping Point, Good Morning Britain and Ninja Warrior.

Elsewhere earlier this month, Ben and Susanna went up against Piers as part of Soccer Aid.

Ben previously joked Piers would be “unbearable” if the team lost the trophy to Piers.

He told The Daily Star: “Susanna has told us to make sure we don’t lose as she has to deal with him on Monday at work.

“She knows her stuff when it comes to football.”

Unfortunately for Ben, the team missed out on the win to Piers’ team.

Piers shared the news of his victory on Twitter, writing: “Greatest night of my life. @socceraid.”

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6.30am on ITV.
