PewDiePie’s thinks YouTube Rewind 2019’s failure ‘might be his fault’ as he addresses scathing backlash

PewDiePie has addressed another controversial year for YouTube’s Rewind video, after it was released last week to some rather lukewarm reviews.

The streamer, who was named the most-watched and most-subscribed to YouTuber of the year, took to the platform, though, to admit the failure of this year’s version may be his fault.

Wait, what?

The Swede – real name Felix Kjellberg – revealed YouTube had approached him to share feedback on the finished product of the video before it was released to the world, and he said he gave them some tips in which they took on board.

So, quite awkward the most popular YouTuber couldn’t even make the thing a success, right?

Celebrating the fact he ‘returned from exile’ after some snubs in previous years, Pewds’ wedding video after he married Marzia Kjellberg was this year’s second most popular video for the YouTuber gang.

‘This is so awesome. Everyone is going to love YouTube Rewind now I’m in it,’ he laughed on Wednesday night. ‘Despite YouTube’s best efforts YouTube Rewind is still a disaster.’

He then went on to reveal: ‘They showed me this rewind before and… they took some of my feedback and it still bombed.’

‘I do find it kind of funny, they try to avoid all the politics that happened in all the previous ones…. And that backfired,’ he added, before he said: ‘There’s not much to say about it, it’s kind of boring.’

Now he thinks the added controversy for a second year means no one will want to get involved for the 2020 version.

He did draw a little annoyance at the fact MrBeast’s video, titled ‘make this video the most liked video on YouTube’, was number one – although he did say MrBeast deserves the top spot.

However: ‘The whole goal of this video…this is not me being salty about not being number one…it defeats the whole purpose. It doesn’t give a genuine reflection of what the year is, that’s my point.

‘They try to avoid the politics, which makes sense but then you lose the reflection of what the year was.’

Pewds wondered why Etika, who died in June, deserved to be recognised in some way.

‘They should have made space for it, in my opinion. I didn’t even think about it when I gave feedback…but it’s so obvious,’ he said.

Felix added: ‘I didn’t think this year was that bad…I don’t think it’s that important, but clearly these videos have worked themselves up to be something really big for the platform.’

Guess we all now love to hate YouTube Rewind, eh?
