Peterborough by-election Tory candidate says PM’s departure boosts his chance of winning the seat

THERESA May’s candidate for the Peterborough by-election claims her decision to go as has boosted his chances of winning.

Tory wannabe MP Paul Bristow told The Sun the PM’s failure to deliver Brexit had been a huge problem on the doorstep.

Next Thursday’s Peterborough by-election – to replace disgraced former Labour MP Fiona Onasanya who was ousted after lying about her speeding ticket – is hotting up to be a three-way fight between the Tories, Labour and the Brexit Party.

Mr Bristow said: “The fact that we’re going to get a new leader certainly helps us. There’s sympathy for her trying her best but there’s more concern that we haven’t delivered Brexit yet.”

Meanwhile former Labour PM Gordon Brown attempted to drum up support for Labour by making a big speech in Peterborough last night.

In a sign Labour is worried of shedding votes to the resurgent Brexit Party, which won last week’s Euro elections, he will urge voters to reject Nigel Farage’s “toxic them-versus-us nationalism”.

He branded the Brexit Party leader is a “back-seat driver” in the race to replace Theresa May, and attacked his “divisive” and “intolerant” politics.

He said: “Winning this battle will take time and its outcome cannot be predicted with certainty – but I know one thing for sure: we will never reunite as a nation unless we walk away from such intolerant nationalism.

“But it is a battle that is is difficult because it is not just Farage that we have to worry about.

“Britain is now witnessing a Tory leadership contest the outcome of which will decide not just our relations with Europe but the direction of our country – and one in which Nigel Farage is, the back-seat driver steering the Tory leadership race.

“To the next prime minister, and indeed to all candidates for the Tory leadership, I say you have a fundamental choice: to run against him or race to the bottom with him.

“For when it comes to this toxic them-versus-us nationalism, no prime minister, indeed no candidate for such a national office, can be permitted to equivocate on what is unequivocally wrong.”
