Porto defender Pepe believes the Portuguese club have what it takes to beat Liverpool in the Champions League.

The 36-year-old joined Porto from Besiktas in January, and he’s gone on to play 12 times for the club since.

Now, he’s preparing to take on Liverpool in the first leg of Porto’s last-16 clash on Tuesday, before the second leg on April 17.

‘We know we have a very difficult task, against a strong team [Liverpool] who play in the style of their coach,’ Pepe told UEFA.

‘But we have to be ourselves, we have to be the same team we have been in this Champions League campaign, a cohesive team that fight for everything, looking for a positive result, looking to score goals – being ourselves.

‘We have to respect Liverpool, who are a great team, but we are going to do our job.’

Pepe also credited his return to Porto from Besiktas as a defining point in his career.

The defender originally played for the Portuguese club between 2004 and 2006 before joining Real Madrid.

‘Returning to Porto was also my dream – to come back to the club where I was so happy,’ he added.

‘This is a team that taught me a lot and made me the player I am today.’
