Pep Guardiola's father speaks out on return to Barcelona after Man City tenure


Pep Guardiola could one day be back at Barcelona as a coach, claims his father Valenti Guardiola.

The Manchester City boss could leave the Premier League champions when his contract expires in 2021 should he choose to reject the chance to stay in England.

Guardiola departed Barcelona back in 2012 after a stellar period in charge of the Catalan outfit saw him win 14 trophies.

And Guardiola Snr was asked about a potential return to the Nou Camp when collecting the ‘Best Coach’ award from the Catalan FA on behalf of his son last night in Spain.

“It could be a yes, that he returns to Barcelona, but it would be to coach,” Valenti responded.

“Since he left home, he has always made his own decisions.

“I’ve never advised him.”

Guardiola himself has discussed a potential return to the Spanish giants in recent months.

Speaking over the summer, the 48-year-old admitted he could go back but not as club president as some have predicted.

“I will return to Barcelona sooner or later. But as president, forget about it,” he said.

“To be president, you have to know [what you’re doing] and be prepared – to have knowledge that I don’t have.

“I’m trying to be a good coach – that hasn’t gone too badly in this decade. I will return to Barcelona to live, sooner or later.”

For now, Guardiola remains committed to City and having a crack at winning a third Premier League on the spin.

The reigning champions sit eight points behind leaders Liverpool after last night’s 4-1 win over Burnley at Turf Moor.

But Guardiola played down his chances of winning the league after the emphatic victory.

And the Reds can extend their lead further when they take on Everton at Anfield this evening.
