Pep Guardiola on Man City chances of catching Liverpool after win at Burnley

Pep Guardiola said it was “crazy and stupid” to think about the title – after Manchester City moved within eight points of leaders Liverpool .

City turned on the style, sweeping aside Burnley to get back to winning ways, with two goals from Gabriel Jesus and further strikes from Rodri and Riyad Mahrez.

The Blues arrived at Turf Moor to find the away dressing-room in darkness, with emergency lighting required to help them find their way around before the problem was fixed.

Guardiola’s side went above Leicester into second place on goal difference, but afterwards the City boss played down their chances of reeling in Liverpool to win a third straight title.

“With the distance between us and Liverpool, it would be crazy to think about the title,” said Guardiola.

“Like everyone says, we are out, we have no chance. The title is over, nobody gives us a chance.

“I don’t believe it, but now we have to think about the derby, the other competitions and take this rhythm forward.

“We’re thinking about ourselves and the next game. To think how many ways to win to be close is a stupid way to think.”

City’s convincing win was the perfect way for Guardiola’s side to warm up for Saturday’s derby showdown with local rivals Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium.

“We need our fans for Saturday,” said Guardiola. “We have four days, tomorrow we’ll watch the United game against Tottenham and see the way we can do it.

“To play these games is the reason why we are here.”

Guardiola reserved special praise for Jesus after he stepped up in the absence of the injured Sergio Aguero, who was watching on at Turf Moor.

“We need Gabriel, strikers are there to score goals and we need him,” said Guardiola. “Strikers like him and Sergio live for goals.
