Pep Guardiola hopes that Raheem Sterling will be fit for Manchester City’s potentially season-defining Champions League last-16 clash with Real Madrid, as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury.

Sterling sat out City’s 1-0 Premier League win over Leicester – where Gabriel Jesus scored the game’s only goal – and remains touch-and-go to make the trip to the Spanish capital.

The England international has been linked with a move to Real Madrid at the end of the season – particularly now City have been banned from Europe’s premier competition for the next two years – and would love the chance to shine against the most dominant force in European history.

Guardiola is yet to win the Champions League outside of his glorious stint at Barcelona and remains hopeful he will have one of his key players fit for the tie with Zinedine Zidane’s men.

‘I think so, he’s getting there,’ he told Sky Sports when asked if Sterling was in contention for Wednesday’s clash with Real Madrid.

‘This kind of injury it’s a little bit dangerous. He feels really well but the doctors said you know in three weeks, so we take a risk.

We want him for this game against Madrid and for the second leg and him be able to play and for the position of the Premier League.

We don’t have any chance to win the Premier League so it’s better to take a chance when we have to do it. We’ll take a decision in the next days.

‘But it’s important for us he’s able, because he’s a very special player.’
